Howdy all...
Man oh man what a February meeting. Thanks Loyd - KM5OE for a top notch, great program. It still seems a little weird to us "flat-landers" to have your repeater sitting on the ground at 6,800 feet where you can just walk (hike) up to it. And, it was duly noted that even "West of the
Pecos" all good ham gear installations must be topped off with a little pookie. The nature scene at the end was perfect; Walter - KK5LO now knows what he's been hunting for! Thanks again Loyd we appreciate you putting it together.
The March meeting promises to be educational. It will be presented by the National Weather Service. The topic is Skywarn. I hear the program has been revised. A good show of hands at the February meeting indicates we should all be ready for an update. Participation in Skywarn is one
way as Amateur Radio operators we can fulfill one of the reasons for the existence of our type of radio service. Remember, the meeting starts at 7:00 p.m.. Be there or be square.
Thanks to Jack - WA8GHZ for presiding over the February board meeting while I was in Seattle. From the looks of the items covered, it was a very productive meeting. What else! Thanks Jack and all the Board.
Thanks also to Joe - KD5KR and Jim - KJ5X for their efforts to get this year's Novice/Technician class arrangements put together. And, thumbs up to all who have volunteered to instruct. Bringing quality Ops into our hobby is important to all of us. Let's go get'm! Man that hat is already
working.
The hat! My special thanks goes to Bill - K5ZTY for his distinguished presentation of the "I'm Their Leader - Which way did they go" hat. Since receiving the hat, my QSO count has gone up through the roof, I got my QSL cards printed, and I've worked another JA. I'm still waiting
to see if I wake up some morning repeating dits and dahs while shaving. Maybe there's some QRP message in the hat band.
In closing, our ARRL Affiliated Club info has been

Novice/Technician Class Scheduled for '99
Second Notice
The 1999 session of the NARS Novice/Tech class hit the ground running the evening of April 7th with an enrollment of twenty-one folks eager to take that first step into the wonderful world of amateur radio. Several individuals had a Tech license and were there to bone up on the code portion of the course. I was pleased to see a significant number of women going for their ticket.
Many of the instructors were present to awe the masses with their tales of struggles and accomplishments, and I must say that this crowd didn't buy half of it!
The first five evenings were devoted entirely to Morse code and were under the direction of the wily George, K5VUU with backup by O.J. K1OJ and Uncle Zed, K5ZTY. Apparently these guys know their business, for many successfully took the code test at the next V.E. session.
Now we're in the theory portion of this course. The
enrollment has slimmed down to twelve determined souls, and the gut feeling
here is that this group is going all the way. The final FCC exam will be
held on June 2nd. Don't be surprised to see a few new faces at Field Day
this year. By June 26th, they'll be ready to hit the trenches!
